Caste in Contemporary India

Caste in Contemporary India, 2nd Edition, investigates the persistence and realities of caste across rural and urban India. The volume examines how caste structures social hierarchy, democratic politics, and economic life.

Drawing on empirical fieldwork from Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and other parts of north India, the text explores untouchability, citizenship struggles, and Dalit activism. It also addresses how caste-based inequalities intersect with corporate hiring and economic change.

The 2018 edition includes a new introduction on caste disparities in the new economy, providing a comparative resource for students and teachers in sociology, political science, and development studies.
