Naked

Naked: The Dark Side of Shame and Moral Life investigates the nature of shame and defends its role within human moral life. The book examines how this painful emotion operates despite its potential for personal distress and destructive behavior.

The volume conceptualizes shame as an internal tension between identity and self-conception, arising when what causes shame overshadows an individual's view of self while still belonging to their identity. The discussion addresses visceral shame tied to nudity, sex, the physical body, and uncontrollable flaws, noting the psychological harm associated with chronic experiences of the emotion.

The text serves researchers and students in normative ethics, moral psychology, and the philosophy of emotion.
